 Outpatient Imaging

Diagnostic imaging techniques such as radiographs (x-rays) and computed tomography (CT scan) provide information that can aid in diagnosing and treating your pet’s condition. Advanced imaging plays a vital role in the diagnosis of many medical problems.

Outpatient Imaging Offered:

CT (computed tomography) is a type of x-ray machine that captures images of the body in slices, allowing the surgeon to see into body like never before. CT is useful for imaging complex anatomy like the pelvis, elbow joint, lungs, chest, skull and abdomen. It is also very useful for planning complex surgeries like large tumour removals on the skin or inside the body e.g. lungs, liver or other internal organs. It is not the best modality for certain soft tissue injuries like tendon strains, or imaging of the brain and spinal cord, but can still be performed understanding these limitations.

Intravenous contrast agent is sometimes given to help highlight areas of interest. Rarely, reactions to the contrast agent can occur and cause problems with the kidneys, brain or inflammatory system (anaphylaxis) respectively, although this is very uncommon.
CTs take about 10-15 minutes to perform from start to finish and are usually done under a heavy sedation. The patient usually requires several hours to recover and have IV fluids administered (if contrast agent has been given) to flush it from the system.
Results are usually available in 24-72 hours.

Pricing will vary depending on how many areas are being looked at and the speed requested for interpretation by a radiologist.
Dr Preston can provide a surgical plan and estimate of the expected costs of the procedure, at no charge, once the final report is available for review.

The images and results will be provided to your primary care vet as part of your pet’s medical record.
